Strong quake hits off Japan near Fukushima

A strong quake centred off  northeastern Japan shook buildings as far away as  Tokyo  on Friday and triggered a one-metre tsunami in an area devastated by last year's  Fukushima disaster, but there were no immediate reports of deaths or serious damage. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, the  U.S. Geological Survey  said, adding that there was no risk of a widespread tsunami. The March 2011 earthquake and following tsunami killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years when the  Fukushima-Daiichi  nuclear plant was destroyed, leaking radiation into the sea and air. Workers at the plant were ordered to move to higher ground after Friday's quake.  Tokyo Electric Power Co  , the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant , reported no irregularities at its nuclear plants. All but two of  Japan 's 50 nuclear reactors have been idled since the Fukushima disaster as the government reviews safety. The quake measured a

Suraja Pavithran's visually-challenged son, Sachin Dev Pavithran, 34, both hailing from the Indian state of Kerela, was among the select few picked by Obama for an important job. Sachin, who did his schooling in Dubai, has been appointed a member of the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, an independent US agency devoted for people with disabilities, Gulf News reported. "We never thought he would make it this big. I wish my husband was alive to share the joy," said Suraja, her voice choked with emotion. Recalling the days when Sachin was struggling with his deteriorating eyesight, Suraja said she would spend hours reading out textbooks and notes to him. "At that time all I was thinking was that he should pass the Board exams," Suraja said

International Olympic Committee suspends India

In a major embarrassment to India, the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday suspended the Indian Olympic Association.  This means that Indian athletes cannot participate in the Olympic Games under the national flag unless the suspension is revoked by the IOC. The alternative is for Indian athletes to participate in the Olympics under the IOC banner, if allowed. Suspension also will lead to the Indian Olympic Association getting any IOC funding (it gets about Rs 8 crore in 4 years). The decision to suspend India was taken by the IOC executive board at a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IOC said that the IOA had been suspended due to the Indian government's interference in the electoral process. Elections to the IOA were held as a part of the sports code framed by the Indian government which the international sports body had said was wrong. The sanctions were imposed on IOA after the Indian Olympic Association did not comply with the IOC rules on the holding of elections.
