Chennai, Dec 20: Well-known playback singer Nithyasree Mahadevan tried to commit suicide following the news of her husband's death in Chennai on Thursday, Dec 20

According to sources, Nithyasree consumed poison when she was informed that her husband died in a hospital in the city. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and was under treatment, informed sources.


Mr Mahadevan committed suicide after jumping into the Adyar river from the Kotturpuram bridge. Police officials, who were the eyewitnesses, said, "He apparently asked the driver to stop his Honda City car and stepped out, talking on his mobile phone around 1 pm.

People who saw him jump off the bridge into the river called the fire and rescue service," added the cops. He was declared brought dead when he was taken to a hospital


Nithyasree, who was supposed to perform at Rama Rao Kalyana Mantap as part of annual margazhi festival in the city, broke down at the news. The couple are survived by two daughters. Reason behind Mr Mahadevan's shocking move has not been known yet.
